Job Description

Job Title: Medical Director Location: Chiúre District, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique Contract Duration: 3 years Working hours: Full-time, 40 Hours per week

DRS is looking for a Medical Director to work for our client, an organization that operates in the global health and development sector, focusing on capacity building, health systems strengthening, and evidence-based programme implementation in close partnership with local ministries of health.

About the Programme: The programme strengthens the health system and improves health outcomes in Cabo Delgado Province. Current projects focus on paediatric emergency care, cholera, cervical cancer, adolescent health (including HIV), and emergency relief. The client is a respected partner of the Ministry of Health. Innovation, research, and policy dialogue are integrated across all projects. The Medical Director will work under the oversight of the Country Director.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical and public health oversight and contribute to strategic development.
  • Directly manage a team of 4 to 5 project managers, including capacity building, HR management, performance reviews, recruitment, and onboarding.
  • Offer mentoring and capacity building to project teams and implementing partners.
  • Ensure timely delivery of project objectives and deliverables.
  • Oversee project cycle management, proposal development, reporting, and review of annual operational plans.
  • Ensure scientific evidence informs project design and lead development of innovative project approaches and scale-up opportunities.
  • Contribute to knowledge management and research in collaboration with the research unit.
  • Support national, regional, and international fundraising efforts.
  • Represent the programme at local and national levels, in networks and technical workgroups.
  • Foster collaboration and build capacity with local stakeholders and implementing partners, especially the Ministry of Health, to ensure compliance with local requirements and regulations.

    Candidate Profile

  • General or Specialist Medical Doctor with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience (an MPH, DTMH or equivalent is an asset).
  • Public health experience in Eastern or Southern Africa, with proven experience in health programme design, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Strong management and leadership experience (covering projects, people, and budgets).
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in Portuguese (or fluency in French, Spanish, or Italian with a willingness to learn Portuguese) and English.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; strategic, conceptual thinker.
  • Interest in evidence-based practice, research, innovation, and networking.
  • High level of interpersonal and intercultural competence; collaborative and team-oriented.
  • Valid driving license required.
